It´s all still rock and roll

Hätte mich Werner Schulze-Erdel mal gefragt "(100 Leute haben wir gefragt:) Nennen sie eine bekannte Rockband", hätte ich wahrscheinlich Led Zeppelin gesagt. Ob die jetzt Classic Rock oder eher Hard Rock gespielt haben, ist erst mal nebensächlich, sie waren halt ´ne Rockband.
Heute ist das alles nicht mehr so einfach...

Zum Beispiel Stoner Rock/Desert Rock, dem sich die Qotsa verschrieben haben. Oder Mittelalter-Rock, wie man ihn von In Extremo, Schandmaul oder Subway to Sally hört, alles andere als klassische Rockbands, oder?
Das Prozedere könnte man jetzt für zig Bands durchführen, ich beschränke mich da lieber auf einen kleinen (und unverbindlichen) Crashkurs:

Pearl Jam, Nirvana und Soundgarden spielen Grunge, Flyleaf, Bush und Filter eher Post Grunge, The Verve, Blur und Oasis spielen Britpop, Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys und Bloc Party spielen Indie-Rock, Muse und Radiohead machen Artrock, Marilyn Manson spielt (teilweise) Alternative Rock, Pink Floyd sind dem Psychedelic Rock zuzuordnen, The Cure eher Dark Wave und so weiter und so fort.

Doch was spielen mittlerweile etablierte Bands wie die White Stripes, The Hives oder Mando Diao? "Rock"? Oder doch Garage Rock?

Punkrock hätte ich auch noch im Angebot, aber normalen Punkrock gibt´s ja auch nicht mehr wirklich. Die Ramones waren eine Punkband, klar. Sick of It All sind ein bisschen "härter", also nicht mehr Punk, sondern schon Hardcore-Punk. Sehe ich auch ein. Dann gibt´s noch die Dropkick Murphys, eigentlich auch eine Punkband. Genau genommen spielen sie aber wie Flogging Molly Folk-Punk. Und Ska-Punk habe ich auch schonmal irgendwo gehört, was das genau sein soll weiß ich aber auch nicht...

So, und jetzt werden die Grenzen noch mehr vermischt...
Was Tool spielen weiß auch keiner so genau, und da progressive noch einen Tick cooler als alternative klingt, spielen sie Progresssive Metal. Progressive Rock gibt´s natürlich auch noch.

Den Begriff Industrial werden auch die Meisten kennen, aber was war das doch gleich?
Richtig, die NIN, Ministry und Rammstein spielen Industrial (kann man wohl auch nochmal in Industrial Rock und Industrial Metal aufzweigen), wobei, stop, nein, bei Rammstein heißt es ja neue deutsche Härte...

Btw, kennt jemand den genauen Unterschied zwischen Crossover, Alternative und Nu Metal? Auch wenn mich jetzt einige der Blasphemie bezichtigen werden, ich erkenne da keine großen Unterschiede...
Ach ja, falls jemand Lust verspürt mich über Retro-Prog, Neo-Prog, Psychobilly, Death Rock oder Anarcho-Punk aufzuklären, ich lasse mich da gerne belehren, dass gibt´s anscheinend nämlich auch alles...

Mit Metal fange ich jetzt erst gar nicht an...Heavy Metal, Speed Metal, Industrial Metal, Progressive Metal, Nu Metal, Gothic Metal, Thrash Metal, Black Metal, True Metal, Power Metal, Doom Metal, Death Metal, Grindcore...da blickt doch keiner mehr durch...

Gut, alles was ich bis jetzt geschrieben habe ist natürlich nur die subjektive Meinung eines Laien, aber wie es der Zufall so will, habe ich ein paar interessante Interviews im Hit Parader vom September 1995 gefunden ;). Und wenn nicht die Frontmänner von Korn und Skid Row Ahnung haben, wer dann?

Hit Parader: Your music has been described as everything from hardcore, to metal, to punk, to alternative. How do you classify it?
Jonathan Davis: It´s probably all those things in one form another, yet it´s different. I really don´t like trying to classify our music because that instantly limits you - it gives people ideas of what to expect. We don´t want to set up any artificial boundaries on ourselves if we don´t have to.

Hit Parader: Do you like a lot of bands that have recently risen to the top of the hard rock heap?
Sebastian Bach: Hey man, we toured with Pantera last time, and they rule! I think Biohazard, White Zombie and bands like that are really great. But then I´ve always been a big fan of good rock and roll. It can be Pearl Jam, who I think are incredibly cool, or Ozzy, who still is god as far as I´m concerned. When Pearl Jam stuck it to MTV last time by not making a video for their album, I thought that was great! I don´t believe in all these media-created titles like "alternative", "hard core" or whatever. It´s all still rock and roll, and either it´s good or it´s not.
